45 days have gone by since Nico Rosberg dropped the bombshell by announcing that he was retiring from FormulaOne racing with immediate effect. This placed the team before a tough challenge: Who was to take the place in the now empty cockpit to race together with three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton to defend the Constructors' World Championship once again? There followed six weeks of in-depth assessments, reflection and negotiations. Now there is a firm official answer to this question: This morning the team engaged Valtteri Bottas. The 27-year old Finnish driver can look back on four Formula-1 seasons with Williams, in which he reached 9 podium positions in 77 races. "At times unexpected circumstances in life bring interesting possibilities with them. Nico's decision in December was a giant surprise and created an undoubtedly challenging situation which the team had to face. But those who weather the storm are all the stronger for it, and that's why we see in this a further possibility for the team to grow", explains Toto Wolff, presenting the fourth modern-age Silver Arrow.
"Valtteri is a sensible young man: He is really down-to-earth, uncomplicated and fully concentrated. Actually, he is quite Finnish, so that he fits in with us perfectly. He can look back on an impressive record in the junior racing series as well as nine podium places in Formula One. But now the time has come to take the next step. Now we shall see whether he is can grow with this challenge and can struggle together with the team to achieve racing victories and world champion titles. We are aware that we are already lagging behind in terms of our preparation for the coming season. Because of this we know that a strenuous programme awaits us in order to integrate him in the team. One thing is certain, though: Knowing Valtteri as I do, I know he will give his best."
